Kerry Kennedy aimed a message directly at Trump in the wake of a lawsuit aimed at preventing the renaming of the Kennedy Center.
, shared a link on X to an article about a lawsuit asking the courts to force Trump and the board and staff of the Kennedy Center to revert to calling the arts complex The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
has contacted the White House for comment. The center was built and named to commemorate the late President John F. Kennedy. In December 2025, the center's board, the members of which were picked by the president, had voted toWhat To Know Kerry Kennedy appears to have put her support behind the motion filed by Democratic Representative Joyce Beatty of Ohio in federal court in Washington, D.C., seeking to stop Trump and the leadership of the Kennedy Center from informally renaming the arts complex “The Trump-Kennedy Center.” Beatty is arguing that the center is legally designated as The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, established by Congress as the nation’s sole official memorial to President John F. Kennedy. Her filing says the renaming violates federal statutes, breaches the board’s fiduciary duties and contradicts the trust Congress created after Kennedy’s assassination. Writing on X in reaction to the suit, Kennedy took aim at Trump. She said: “To honor President Jefferson, Congress erected the Jefferson Memorial. To honor President Lincoln, Congress erected the Lincoln Memorial. To honor President Kennedy, Congress erected the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.” Kennedy continued: “No president, no board of directors, can change the names or send in a wrecking crew under the guise of ‘repairs.’” She ended her statement with a comment addressed directly at Trump: “Stand down, President Trump. You are no king, and you don’t have the power. Only Congress can change that.” Back in December, she had accused Trump of “repressing” artistic expression, which she said goes against the core mission of the center and made the inclusion of his name unsuitable. “President Trump and his administration have spent the past year repressing free expression, targeting artists, journalists, and comedians, and erasing the history of Americans whose contributions made our nation better and more just,” Kennedy wrote in a post on X. “President Kennedy proudly stood for justice, peace, equality, dignity, diversity, and compassion for those who suffer. President Trump stands in opposition to these values, and his name should not be placed alongside President Kennedy’s.” After the new signage was installed reading “The Donald Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts,” Kerry Kennedy posted a viral message to X saying she would personally take the letters down once Trump leaves office: “Three years and one month from today, I’m going to grab a pickax and pull those letters off that building…Are you in?”announced on Truth Social that the center would close on July 4, 2026, for approximately two years of construction and renovation.
