Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-Imagn Images The Justin Fields era in New York is officially over, as the Jets agreed to trade the quarterback to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2027 sixth-round draft pick, per multiple reports on Monday.
The Chiefs will be taking on $3 million of Fields’ salary next season, the final year of his contract before becoming a free agent. Injuries punctuated his time in New York, too. He suffered a concussion before a knee injury put him on injured reserve, while Glenn was forced to start career backup Tyrod Taylor and undrafted rookie Brady Cook. It forced the Jets to pivot and trade for Geno Smith, the veteran quarterback who was a second-round draft pick of the team in 2013 and spent four years with them before being given up on. In Kansas City, Fields will back up star passer Patrick Mahomes, who is coming off a 2025 campaign that ended early due to a torn ACL and LCL. He could figure as a wildcat option to add more versatility to the Chiefs’ offense, though it was something he was unwilling to do with the Jets.Joe Pantorno has been the executive sports editor of amNewYork since 2020.
