New York Jets rookie left tackle Olu Fashanu's season is over due to a plantar fasciitis injury. While initial reports suggested surgery would be necessary, the team later clarified that Fashanu will not require surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. However, a timeline for his return remains uncertain.
New York Jets rookie offensive tackle Olu Fashanu (74) smiled as he left the field after the Jets beat the New England Patriots, 24-3, Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, in East Rutherford, N.J. Fashanu got his first career reps after starting offensive tackle Morgan Moses got hurt the second half.It looked bad when Jets rookie left tackle Olu Fashanu fell to the turf in pain Sunday, as he tried to limp back to the sideline in the fourth quarter of the loss to the Rams.
“Unfortunately, his season is done,” Ulbrich said, adding the team will put him on injured reserve sometime before Sunday’s game at Buffalo.Fashanu, who the Jets picked No. 11 overall in April’s NFL Draft, underwent multiple imaging tests since Sunday’s injury and was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. Ulbrich indicated Fashanu would likely need surgery, saying he was “fairly certain that they’re going to have to go in there and have a procedure to fix it.” But a team spokesperson later clarified that Fashanu has an injury to his plantar fascia that will not require surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. Ulbrich wouldn’t speculate on Fashanu’s potential availability for spring offseason workouts or training camp, which is expected to start in late July. And the Jets' clarification didn’t include a target date for Fashanu’s full recovery. The typical recovery timeline for athletes who undergo plantar fasciitis surgery is in the range of three to four months. With Fashanu not expected to need surgery, even the worst case would likely put him in line to return to the field with time to spare before training camp and possibly offseason workouts. Still there are too many unknown factors to be certain about any timetable and how the injury might impact Fashanu, if at all, in his sophomore season. Fashanu was hurt late in Sunday’s loss to the Rams and needed help from a teammate to limp off the field without putting weight on his left foo
