The New York Jets had their first joint practice Thursday. And it was eventful.
The regular season starts a month from Friday for the Jets, but receiver Garrett Wilson showed against the Commanders that he’s already ready. Wilson was dominant throughout practice, weaving his way through the Commanders’ defense and the heavy downpours without a problem.
“Woke up morning, saw the weather,” Saleh said. “He’s taken every rep in practice, so I felt like it was just unnecessary, heightened environment, unfamiliar foes in terms of taking care of one another. I just didn’t want to expose him to it. if it was a game, if it was a practice, if it was clean outside, he would’ve practiced today, call it overprotection, but it was just the decision I made.”
Saleh also noted the Jets’ upcoming joint practices against the Panthers and Giants as opportunities for Rodgers to get in important work before the regular season. Given the Jets luck – overall and with Rodgers – it’s hard to fault Saleh for this decision. None of the possible good from Rodgers practicing Friday could outweigh the potential risk of something wacky happening on a slick field with an unfamiliar opponent in a downpour – even if Rodgers wanted to be out there.
He completed just three of eight passes and the Jets’ two-minute drill drive stalled out at midfield – when Wilson caught a deep ball from Taylor but was ruled out of bounds down the right sideline, despite Wilson’s argument that he was in bounds. “I was just talking to him down there ,” Gardner said of Daniels. “He was like, ‘I would have been able to get that throw over anybody but you.’”
