A JetBlue flight from Newark to Palm Beach was forced to return shortly after takeoff due to engine failure and smoke in the cabin, prompting a temporary airport closure and passenger evacuation. The incident is under investigation by the FAA.
A JetBlue flight bound for Palm Beach County turned back shortly after takeoff from Newark-Liberty International Airport on Wednesday due to engine failure and smoke in the cabin, The emergency prompted a temporary closure of the airport, which reopened around 7 p.
m. and resumed normal operations but caused delays.According to the Port Authority, the Airbus A320 departed Newark around 5:45 p.m. but immediately returned after encountering mechanical issues."On Wednesday, February 18, JetBlue flight 543 from Newark to West Palm Beach returned to Newark shortly after takeoff following a reported engine issue and smoke in the cabin. The aircraft landed safely, and customers and crewmembers evacuated using the aircraft’s slides. "Safety is JetBlue’s top priority. We are focused on supporting our customers and crewmembers and will work closely with the appropriate federal authorities to investigate what occurred." The Federal Aviation Administration said: "After JetBlue Flight 543 landed safely at Newark Liberty International Airport and exited the runway, the crew reported smoke in the cockpit and evacuated passengers via slides. The FAA has temporarily paused some arrivals to the airport and will investigate the incident that occurred around 5:55 p.m. local time." About 122 passengers were on board. One passenger was taken to a hospital after reporting chest pains. Robert Katz is a commercial pilot and flight instructor with 44 years of experience. He listened to the audio recording of the JetBlue pilot talking with Air Traffic Control in Newark from the moment the plane took off to the moment it landed. He said once the plane landed, airport firefighters were standing by with hoses. "Airport rescue firefighting is being called out of the fire station to stage on the runway in anticipation of an aircraft that's already in difficulty, quite possibly crashing onto the runway," Katz said. "Then it becomes a real problem, because the pilot now reports, after a safe landing, that there's smoke in the airplane and that he's going to evacuate on the field. When you see smoke like that, you think fire is behind it, so you take no chances and you evacuate the airplane, which is the right thing to do."BE THE FIRST TO COMMENTA woman working at a Carlisle nursing home has been accused of making Amazon purchases in December with stolen debit card information from a resident.Man killed in Cumberland County house fire: coroner The Cumberland County Coroner was called to a house fire in Middlesex Township where a man died Wednesday evening.Dispatch confirmed the fire broke out around 7Lancaster Township police have announced an uptick in car thefts targeting certain Kia and Hyundai vehicles, and owners are urged to exercise caution. The Hershey Company is responding to allegations from the son of H.B.
