Jessica Springsteen, Laura Kraut and McLain Ward won silver for the U.S. equestrian jumping team after falling just short of the gold in a dramatic jump-off
TOKYO—Jessica Springsteen came to the Tokyo Olympics as an unusually young competitor in a sport that skews older. Then she and her teammates were thrown into the most pressure-packed showdown that exists in their sport: a jump-off.
The riders went one-by-one over the Olympic jumping course. The tiniest fractions of time began to feel like eternities. The difference in the jump-off that decided gold and silver: 1.3 seconds. Springsteen, Laura Kraut and McLain Ward won silver in the equestrian jumping team final after falling just short in the jump-off to the Swedes that rekindled a dramatic showdown between the same two countries from just three years ago. It was in 2018 when the Americans prevailed in the same situation at the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games, which included many of the same riders.
Despite barely losing in the tense ending—which pitted the riders against the two countries against each other one more time to settle the tied event—it was an impressive showing for the Americans, especially in light of their earlier performances. None of the Americans qualified for the individual jumping final as the trio finished fifth in qualifying for the team event.
That was good enough to send Springsteen, Kraut and Ward into the final Saturday, though it made clear they had work to do to get on the podium. Then they came through with a performance strong enough to be even with the Swedes. It had to go to a jump-off.
