Jesse Winker, returning to the New York Mets, has expressed his willingness to play first base in 2025 if needed. The Mets' plans at first base are uncertain with Pete Alonso's free agency status unknown. Winker, known primarily as a designated hitter and backup outfielder, could become a valuable asset at first base if Mark Vientos remains at third. Winker played a crucial role in the Mets' NLCS run last season and expressed his strong desire to remain with the team.
Jesse Winker , returning to the New York Mets after signing a one-year contract, has expressed openness to playing first base in 2025 if the situation arises. During a Zoom availability on Wednesday, Winker stated, 'I'm definitely comfortable. Whatever's asked of me, I'll be ready and I'll put my best foot forward, and give it everything I have.'The Mets' plans at first base remain uncertain as of this offseason.
Long-time first baseman Pete Alonso is currently a free agent, and a reunion is far from guaranteed. If Alonso departs in free agency, the logical move would be to shift Mark Vientos from third base to first. This would potentially spark a competition for the starting third base spot between Brett Baty, Luisangel Acuna, and Ronny Mauricio. However, relying on prospects for such a crucial position could prove risky if none of the younger players definitively secure the role.Winker's experience, while primarily as a designated hitter and backup outfielder, could become valuable should the Mets prefer Vientos to remain at third. Although there haven't been any discussions about Winker playing first base this offseason, his willingness to adapt and his previous experience at the position, albeit briefly during a minor league rehab stint and pregame workouts, make him a viable option. Regardless, Winker's return satisfies the desire of at least one non-pitcher to remain with the Mets. He played a significant role in their NLCS run, batting .318/.531/.636 with one home run, four RBI, and seven walks in the postseason. Winker expressed his strong desire to return after the season concluded, stating, 'After the season ended, I made it pretty clear that I wanted to stay... The overall experience was incredible. How they treated my family was amazing and then everything baseball-wise was probably the most fun I've had. Being a part of something bigger than yourself is just really why you play this game.
