The 'Kinds of Kindness' stars on entering Yorgos Lanthimos's world and working together on the new film.
Fans of director Yorgos Lanthimos received a gift in June, in the form of his new film Kinds of Kindness. It strays from his two most recent features, Oscar winners Poor Things and The Favourite, in that it’s not a period piece—the look and feel are both very contemporary—nor is it just one film. Yes, Kinds of Kindness is another dark comedy, but it’s also an anthology: a triptych fable with a rotating cast of actors who take on different roles in each of the three vignettes.
He’s got a very gentle touch, and while his view of things is very clear and his aesthetics are very clear and the things that he likes are very clear, sometimes he’s open to find different avenues to things.JP: I think I had some expectation that he might be—just from loving his movies and seeing them all—one of these more controlling types of directors, because all of the themes in his films deal with this.
