Cleveland’s Development, Planning and Sustainability Committee decided Tuesday to designate Jesse Owens’ youth home in the Fairfax neighborhood as a historic city landmark.
CLEVELAND , Ohio -
According to a presentation during Tuesday’s Development, Planning and Sustainability meeting, Owens’ family moved into 2178 E 100th St. in 1934, just as the star athlete approached the height of his career. Between gestures like the Jesse Owens statue in Huntington Park and the oak tree planted at James Rhodes High School in 2022, this isn’t the first recognition of the four-time-gold-medalist in Cleveland. Griffin says the landmark designation was made with the Fairfax community in mind.
Currently, the building is a residential property occupied by several tenants. Whether or not the form and function of the building changes in the future has yet to be decided.
