Given his experience managing in America with MLS’ Red Bulls, and his stature having managed at the top levels in England with Leeds, Germany with Red Bull Leipzig and Austria with Red Bull Salzburg, Marsch’s name has long been linked with the USMNT team job. Marsch, 50, interviewed for the USMNT’s vacant head-coaching job in December 2022 after Berhalter’s contract expired, but the United States Soccer Federation opted to bring Berhalter back on a new deal. This past May, Marsch, a Racine, Wis. native, blasted the USMNT and USSF for his experience interviewing for the position, saying, “I wasn’t treated very well.”
He’s since found immediate success, guiding Canada to the Copa America semifinals in their first campaign in the tournament. Berhalter, meanwhile, failed to make it out of the group stage with the USMNT, becoming the first host nation to be eliminated in the group stage in tournament history.“And to be fair, unless there’s a big shift in the organization, I don’t think that I’ll ever have any interest in that job in the future,” Marsch said. “So I’m really happy here, I couldn’t be happier actually in terms of what it’s like to work with the leaders in this organization and what it’s like to work with this team.
