Acquired by the Athletics from the Marlins , Luzardo boasts undeniable talent, but concerns linger about his durability. He asserts he's pain-free following a back injury that curtailed his 2023 season. Luzardo 's 2023 season ended prematurely after he experienced a stress reaction in his lower back on June 16th. Despite the pain, he managed to pitch five innings that day. He was subsequently placed on the injured list on June 22nd and didn't resume throwing until late September.
Luzardo's talent is evident in his mid- to upper-90s fastball and deceptive sliders and changeups. He started Game 1 of the Marlins' 2023 playoff series against the Phillies and their opening day in 2022. However, recurring injuries have been a concern. He missed two months in 2022 with a strained forearm and only made 12 starts with a 5.00 ERA in 2022.
