“Having a haven like this means the world, especially given the challenges in Palestine,” says Abdulrahim Harara.

Jerusalem Coffee House opened this October in North Oakland with coffee drinks inspired by Palestinian culture. The cafe also has events like live music and chess matches. Ever heard of a coffee drink called “Bebsi”? It combines cardamom with the fizziness of soda and richness of espresso, and it’s on offer right now at the new Jerusalem Coffee House in Oakland’s Temescal district.. It’s been nicely redesigned and amenable to people working or just hanging out.

“Creating our drink recipes was a natural process, inspired by the aromatic spices and flavors deeply rooted in Palestinian cuisine,” he says. “These tastes, which have been a part of my life since childhood, reflect a tradition passed down through generations of Palestinians – from my grandmother to my mother and to myself. It’s more than just a blend of spices; it’s a representation of our cultural heritage and ancestry.

“Having a haven like this means the world, especially given the challenges in Palestine,” Harara says, adding that the “goal is clear: to create a space where the authentic Palestinian narrative can shine. Through our work and outreach, we want to offer the global community a truly unique Palestinian cultural experience. We stand united, striving to bridge gaps, foster understanding and share the rich heritage of Palestine with the world.
