A motor failure forced officials to close the Middle Thorofare Bridge, which is also called the Two Mile Bridge, to all car, bike and pedestrian traffic early Sunday morning, local and county officials said. The bridge re-opened Wednesday.The Middle Thorofare Bridge, also known as the Two Mile Bridge, was back open to vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians traveling between Diamond Beach in Lower Township and Cape May as of 2 a.m., the Cape May County Bridge Commission said.
Officials located a new drive-shaft motor and worked around the clock to repair the drive-shaft system that left the bridge stuck in the upright position. “Under the leadership of our County Administrator and Bridge Commission Director Kevin Lare, we took a best-case multi-week closure scenario and made a miracle happen,” Cape May County Bridge Commission Director Leonard Desiderio said in a statement.
The bridge motor failed over the weekend and was deemed Inoperable and unrepairable by officials, who said the best-case scenario is that repairs would take “many weeks.”N.J. family called 911 for help.
