“Our objective is to provide a safe and positive environment for our scholars to come and get a quality education,” said Board of Education President DeJon Morris. Locked phone pouches, daily phone trade-ins for laptops and limiting student Wi-Fi access were all discussed during the meeting as possible means to limit cellphone use by students. The first two methods are being piloted at two district schools, and the schools’ principals described the implementation of the methods a success.
“This definitely gave children their voice to socialize, to interact,” said School 34 Principal Janeen Maniscalco, who has overseen the pouch program at her school. “We want to promote collaboration.”
