In response to New York City's new congestion pricing policy, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop suggests implementing a toll on vehicles entering New Jersey from Manhattan. Fulop believes this 'reverse congestion pricing' could generate revenue for New Jersey Transit and address the state's transportation challenges.

New York City implemented congestion pricing less than two weeks ago. While preliminary data released by the MTA showed modest traffic reductions in its first week, the policy remains controversial. Last week, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop proposed a 'reverse congestion pricing' toll. Fulop stated, ' New Jersey has the same opportunity to push the buttons that New York is pushing against us. We could do that to them, but the goal is to get to a table to have a reasonable solution.

'However, not everyone supports this idea. Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer, representing NJ-5, expressed his opposition on Good Day New York. He said, 'No, I want people to come to Jersey. Right, so, I don't want to hit any hard-working families with more taxes. I want lower taxes, lower costs for people. We got to make life more affordable for people.'Fulop believes reverse congestion pricing is the answer to New York City's new toll. He highlighted numerous crossings between Staten Island, New York, and Bergen and Hudson Counties in New Jersey, suggesting opportunities to implement a similar impact fee. Fulop envisions the revenue generated going towards funding New Jersey's mass transit system, which faces issues with delays and cancellations. He stated, 'My view is that New Jersey Transit is a terrible product, and it should be invested in more, and until you get a reliable transportation system in New Jersey, you can't responsibly think that people are going to take the trains. But this was an opportunity to get hundreds of millions of dollars into New Jersey Transit, and I think the governor just took a very easy political approach.'Fulop further elaborated that the details are yet to be finalized but suggested gantries or toll sites could be positioned outside tunnels and bridges in New Jersey. Like congestion pricing, there might be exemptions or crossing credits. It remains unclear if, similar to congestion pricing, New Jersey residents would pay a toll to reenter their home state, like some New Yorkers currently do. FOX 5 NY reached out to the MTA and transit advocacy groups for their perspectives but received no response. Attempts to contact New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy for his comments were also unsuccessful.Congestion pricing is an electronic tolling system that charges vehicles for entering Manhattan's Congestion Relief Zone (CRZ) – the area below 60th Street, excluding certain highways like the FDR Drive and West Side Highway. The program aims to:* Reduce traffic congestion in Manhattan.* Generate revenue for transportation improvements in the city.Toll rates decrease by 75% for drivers who use toll-less crossings to exit Manhattan
