This year’s festival also offers an eclectic selection of acts representing the many different permutations of the genre.

The 11th annual Jersey City Jazz Festival returns next week bigger and more eclectic than ever, running from Wednesday, May 24, to Sunday, June 2.

“We’ve always wanted to get back to doing shows during the week, and so going forward, we got a lot of good sponsors this year and we can pick up the slack a little bit by getting the audience involved with more ticketed events,” said festival Director Bryan Beninghove. “We’re hoping that will make this a more sustainable event.

“We have the wonderful, wonderful advantage of not having to fly all the artists in and put them up in hotels if they’re local,” Beninghove noted. “That gives us a lot of potential to really grow because there are so many amazing artists right here that can just take the PATH or light rail over here.”

“Jazz is like the word food,” Beninghove said. “You know, there’s Chinese food and Italian food, and it’s all food and it all goes in your belly. We look at jazz the same way. We have some Brazilian music this year, a little bit of electronic stuff, vocal Jazz and some Big Band stuff, even some salsa. We’re really trying to mix it up.”

Venues include several Downtown locations — the Pet Shop, Skinners Loft, the Archer, Café Corretto, the Nimbus Arts Center, Departed Soles — and the Statuary on Congress Street in JC Heights. The historic Brennan Court House will host a ticketed show featuring the Jerry Weldon Quartet on Thursday, May 30, at 7 p.m.
