There have been six homicides in Jersey City this year, down from last year’s 10.

For a second consecutive year, Jersey City touted a record-low homicide rate and its first in the single digits, but the city continues to struggle with lower-level crimes that saw shocking increases in 2024.

Shea admitted police have struggled to keep up with the rate of incidents, noting that perpetrators are released on summons with a court date and return to the streets to commit similar offenses, such as package thefts from building vestibules. There have also been 29 shootings this year, a 69% decline from last year’s 49 and the lowest number in the past 10 years. Police recovered 214 illegal guns, a similar rate to the past two years.

The city has installed more than 4,000 high-resolution closed-circuit surveillance cameras across the city since 2020. That has allowed for better evidence-gathering for successful prosecutions since witnesses are often hesitant to participate in investigations, Shea said. The city and federal authorities have also previously touted the success of the Jersey City Violent Crime Initiative, which has individual prosecutors assigned to individual gangs. In 2023, homicides were down nationally by 11.6%, the most significant drop since the FBI began data collection. Homicides were also down in New York City this year as of the end of the summer.
