Houston Astros' Jeremy Pena and Yordan Alvarez collide catching a fly ball by New York Mets' Dominic Smith during the eighth inning of a baseball game, Wednesday, June 29, 2022, in New York. Two days after his scary outfield collision with Yordan Alvarez, Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña was cleared from concussion protocol and returned to the lineup for Friday’s series opener against the Angels.
Peña started at shortstop and batted second. Alvarez was not in the lineup and, according to the team, was still undergoing further testing. Astros manager Dusty Baker declined to say whether Alvarez was available off the bench Friday. On Wednesday in New York, the two players collided forcefully in left field while pursuing a fly ball in the eighth inning of Houston’s 2-1 win over the Mets. Peña said that Alvarez, who was playing left field, called the ball early. Peña was focused on tracking the baseball and did not hear him. Both men were down on the field for a few moments following the collision. Peña got to his feet first but was shaken up and had a cut on the inside of his mouth.
“The situation could have been a lot worse and I’m glad it’s pretty minor,” Peña said. “When I got close to making the play, I kind of saw his shadow, and I knew it was gonna be a collision. That's why I tried to brace a little bit at the end. But yeah, when we first hit, and I looked over and he was not moving, it was a scary, scary, scary moment.”
The Astros shortstop initially tried to stay in the game after the collision, but trainers pulled him as a precaution because the cut on his mouth kept bleeding. Peña said the cut did not require stitches and that he felt no residual soreness, though he acknowledged the impact his run-in with Alvarez — who is 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds — had in the moment.
