Lord Faulks withdrew from the “long-standing engagement”, with an Ipso spokesperson saying his attendance “would not be appropriate at this time” due to the “volume of complaints” the regulator had received. That the row forced an intervention by Mr Sunak will not have amused Mr Murdoch, given the value he has always placed on cultivating a close relationship with world leaders.
Despite the volume of complaints, Mr Clarkson’s article is unlikely to result in censure from Ipso, since matters of “hate and offence” lie outside the Code. The body states: “Newspapers and magazines are free to publish what they think is appropriate so long as the rights of individuals – which are protected under the Code – are not infringed.”
