Everything Ryan Day said about Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate and Ohio State football's injury protocol.

“Our policy is that we don’t discuss specifics on injuries,” he said. “Once you start going down a little bit here, a little bit there, you can create a problem. And so, for a number of reasons, we don’t discuss those things.

We put out the report the day of the game. “I can tell you that they’re in great spirits. The medical staff is working hard. We’ll take it day-to-day and see how they come in each day, but they’re working hard to get back on the field… We check in every day. We take the advice of the medical staff and use their feedback and we go from there. We’ll continue to do that.” What Ohio State coach Ryan Day said about the health of Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate and more during his Tuesday press conference2 big things Ohio State football needs to achieve against Rutgers Smith — a sophomore who’s arguably the best player in college football — was questionable heading into Saturday’s win against UCLA. He played, but he only took 22 snaps and appeared to favor his right leg postgame. The Florida native took a hard hit that sidelined him momentarily during an Oct. 11 win at Illinois. When asked if that hit left a lingering effect, Day said, “Not that I know of.” Day was then asked if anything during the course of his 22 snaps vs. UCLA complicated Smith’s injury.Tate, a junior who could be the first receiver taken in the 2026 NFL Draft, wasn’t listed on OSU’s availability report heading into a Nov. 8 win at Purdue. He then didn’t play in the game, though Day said afterward he likely could’ve taken the field if necessary.“I don’t want to get into everything because once I start answering one question, then it could lead to something else. I don’t want to comment on any of that stuff,” Day said when asked if Tate faced a setback. On Saturdays, OSU publishes an availability report two hours before kickoff, but within the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, that practice is much more frequent than once a week. “The medical staff each day gives a report on how someone’s doing — whether they’re in practice full go, limited or out,” Day said. “And then, you know, kind of gives an update on how things are going. Then, as we get closer to the game, it’s available, unavailable or questionable... “We just go off of that and certainly the communication between the players and the medical staff is important in terms of making those decisions.” Ohio State has taken a strategic approach in keeping players healthy as the College Football Playoff has expanded from four teams to 12, hence making the season longer. The Buckeyes have played as slowly as any team offensively and prioritize rotating players as often as possible, particularly when winning by a wide margin. As the sport evolves, Day was asked if load management — a term often used in the NBA, which has an 82-game regular season — could become a trend in college football. “I think a part of it is the season, and then a part of it would be how you practice during the week and where somebody is within their season,” Day said. “We get a lot of good information from sports science compared to previous years and try to do the best we can. But we also have to win, you know, every game. That’s the balance.”If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
