Jennifer Lopez plays Atlas Shepherd who's on a mission to stop a rogue artificial intelligence known as Harlan (Simu Liu) in the new 'Atlas' trailer.
Atlas Shepherd has spent years hunting Harlan, but things take a turn when the planet becomes inhospitable. The agent finds herself needing assistance from an AI named Smith, with whom she interacts via Smith’s voice, who speaks to her inside her robotic armor. But her distrust of AIs, presumably built from chasing Harlan — originally created to advance humanity but now exists to destroy it — prevails.
She and Smith initially appear to have a contentious relationship, but she needs the AI to survive in her battle against Harlan. “This won’t work if you don’t trust me,” Smith advises. In the clip, Atlas begins to see Earth through Smith’s eyes, and they start to bond, even finding humor as they sit at the cusp of oblivion. “If we don’t stop Harlan, all life on Earth is doomed,” Atlas says as a montage of fiery visuals and explosions flash by. “Shit,” Smith deadpans.
“You’re in my head, and the only thing you learn how to do is curse?” Atlas quips. “I’m an adaptive learner,” Smith replies. The Brad Peyton-directed sci-fi thriller premieres on Netflix May 24. In addition to Lopez and Liu, the film stars Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla, and Mark Strong.
