Caitlyn Jenner burst into the California gubernatorial race last month to national fanfare, but the early voter reaction in the state suggests she's struggling to compete with experienced Republican rivals vying to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom.

DiCamillo said Jenner could benefit from ample media exposure and use that time in the spotlight to sway voters. She can bring considerable financial resources to bear. But Walsh warned that Jenner’s status as “a blank political slate with statewide national and international brand recognition” could make it easier for Newsom and his allies to shape perceptions of her after moving early to depict Jenner as an ally of former President Donald Trump and Republican extremists.
Despite the worrisome early returns, some California conservatives believe Jenner would be uniquely positioned to break through in a deep-blue state where Republicans have been shut out of statewide office for years. Jenner may help keep the recall in the national conversation, which could in turn drive contributions to her and other challengers — as well as Newsom. But her rollout has been shaky, while Newsom has had several weeks of positive news developments.
