Jenna Ortega, star of recent horror movies like Scream 6 and X, reveals what she thinks her secret is for achieving such success in the genre.
Jenna Ortega, perhaps the most well-known "scream queen" of today's horror movie landscape, reveals her secret to success in the genre. One of Ortega's first forays into the horror genre came in 2013 with Insidious: Chapter 2. After that smaller role, Ortega would really make a name for herself in the genre with more recent movies like The Babysitter: Killer Queen, X, and, of course 2022's Scream.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Sitting down with Elle Fanning for a recent "Actors on Actors" interview segment from Variety, Ortega shares why she thinks people love to watch her in horror movies. According to the actor, it's not her scream that's key, but the face she makes when she cries.
“I love horror. Horror is home. People really like to see me hysterical. I wouldn’t even say I have a good scream but it’s just very instinctive and I think I have a really ugly crying face, which people just feed on. If you’re in a theater and you see someone who looks, like, atrocious while crying you think, ‘Oh man, she’s really in it.
While Ortega may have been a known quantity in horror before, the success of Wednesday has been a significant turning point. While Wednesday isn't outright horror itself, Ortega has amassed quite a following from the show, and these new fans could follow her to other projects. It's possible that Scream 6, for example, drew in those unfamiliar with the franchise just because of Ortega's involvement.
The horror movie landscape continues to thrive for a variety of reasons, but it's interesting that Ortega, followed perhaps Samara Weaving and Emma Roberts, is now the actor of the new generation most associated with the genre. It remains to be seen how her relationship with the genre will continue to play out, but it's clear that audiences can expect more scenes of Ortega in distress in movies to come.
