Rep. Hakeem Jeffries criticizes Rep. Mike Johnson's handling of the collapsed government funding agreement, accusing him of damaging relationships with Democrats and jeopardizing the GOP's stability.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) criticized Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) for his handling of last week's collapsed government funding agreement, claiming Johnson had damaged relationships with Democrats and risked further Republican rebellion. Jeffries warned on Sunday's “Inside with Jen Psaki” that another GOP revolt against Johnson was possible, stating, “And there will be no Democrats available to save him — or the extreme MAGA Republicans — from themselves.
” Last week, Johnson withdrew from a deal to prevent a government shutdown after facing backlash from conservatives over the 1,500-page bill. Prominent figures, including Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Elon Musk, urged Republicans to reject the agreement. Johnson then substituted it with a scaled-down stopgap bill, proceeding to a vote despite Democrats expressing they had not been consulted. The new measure ultimately failed, leading Johnson to reach a subsequent agreement with Democrats, who were still angered by the initial deal's rejection. Jeffries emphasized the need to continue addressing provisions omitted from the original agreement, stating, “We’re going to have to continue to work on several of those as we move forward. We’ll have the ability to wage those battles over the next few weeks and the next few months, given that this is only a short-term continuing resolution that will expire on March 14.” Johnson secured the Speaker's position in October 2022 following a mutiny led by former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) that ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), halting the House for nearly a month
