Video footage shows that the patient was not acting aggressively or attempting to leave the building.
Jefferson Abington Hospital was cited after video surveillance showed a security guard used excessive force against a patient in the emergency trauma center.A hospital employee later heard the guard “gloating” about how having “had to slam somebody,” according to a state inspection report.Inspectors concluded that the security guard used excessive force against the patient in the April 23 episode, which drew one of the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s most serious warnings.
The report does not identify the patient’s age, gender, or race, or indicate what the person was being treated for. But video surveillance reviewed by inspectors and detailed in the report shows how the episode unfolded. Hospital staffers who reviewed the footage with safety inspectors confirmed that the patient had not been physically or verbally aggressive, and was “not going toward the exit.”
The hospital’s policy is that excessive force should be used only when staff believe it is the only way to prevent a patient from harming self or someone else.
