We shot it wearing an earpiece, so the other person could be on the phone feeding their lines. When we shot it, I thought it was kind of weird but when I saw it with the sound effects I said, “Oh my god. It sounds like I’m destroying the toilet.” It was shockingly different from what I was thinking.So often on a TV show you see two friends and think, “I don’t know any two people in the world like that” but these two people you see why they’re friends and how they connect.
I play the moment. I usually don’t plan the laughter at all. But this season there were a couple of times in the script where the writers said, “We hear Joel’s giggle from the other room” and I’d wonder, “Which giggle do they want?” I wanted to give them the right one. Q. Mike Hagerty, who played Sam’s father, died suddenly at age 67 last year. Beyond the tragedy of this loss, how much did it affect the show?
