Jeff Goldblum as Zeus with shade glasses in Kaos

Summary Jeff Goldblum's Zeus shows his ruthlessness in a new trailer for Netflix's Kaos. The upcoming series sees Goldblum as a modern iteration of the Greek god as his insecurities and paranoia threaten the entire world and three humans connected to a prophecy he fears. The cast also includes Janet McTeer as Hera, Cliff Curtis as Poseidon, and David Thewlis as Hades, while Westworld star Aurora Perrineau plays Riddy, one of the humans connected to the prophecy that concerns Zeus.

Zeus' wrath goes beyond mere words as mangled corpses are briefly shown dangling from a blood-streaked wall, and a man is later shown crucified on a cliff. Riddy's defiant line "I defy the gods" teases the resistance Zeus will be met with, specifically from her character. While most of the trailer is in color, there are several shots in black and white, potentially teasing a unique approach to the series' cinematography.

Kaos' modern take on Greek mythology is promising, but it is not the only story to make a contemporary exploration, with others including Percy Jackson and the Olympians and American Gods. As teased by the newest trailer, Kaos has a much darker tone than Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

The darker and more mature American Gods novel by Neil Gaiman and the Starz television adaptation are more similar to what Kaos will be. However, the protagonist of American Gods, Shadow Moon, believes that he is an ordinary individual when he is thrust into Norse mythology as being a reality in the modern world. This is a significant difference from Kaos where, despite his ruthlessness and unsympathetic nature, Goldblum's all-powerful Zeus is the protagonist at the forefront of the story.
