Elon Musk aims to make life multiplanetary, but Jeff Bezos believes we should be building massive cylindrical space stations.

Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are two of the most powerful people on Earth. Both are looking to extend their influence beyond our planet.

However, Musk isn’t the only billionaire with a bold vision for humanity’s future in space. Jeff Bezos has outlined a contrasting plan. Let’s look at how these two incredibly powerful individuals in the space industry hold opposing visions for the future of humanity in space.Musk has long declared that SpaceX’s mission is to make humanity a multiplanetary species.

Crucially, Starship will be fully reusable. This will dramatically reduce the cost of successive launches, making human spaceflight to Mars economically feasible. That’s not to say Bezos doesn’t also have a plan for expanding humanity into the Solar System. In a recentwith podcaster Lex Fridman, the Amazon founder said he believes we should not live on other planets. Instead, we should be looking to build giant cylindrical space stations.

NASA recently tapped Bezos’ company to build one of the private space stations that will succeed the International Space Station. The company’s Orbital Reef station is advertised as a “space business park, ” including luxury living quarters and scientific laboratories.for its Blue Alchemist project. Blue Alchemist has demonstrated that it can build solar panels in space using only lunar soil. There is no clear winner when comparing Musk’s and Bezos’ visions.

Putting the logistics of each vision aside, one could argue Musk is much closer to achieving his vision. There is, however, a big caveat. Colonizing Mars is an incredibly ambitious goal.
