Jeff Bezos pays tribute to his dad, Mike, who fled Cuba at age 16
Jeff Bezos paid tribute to his dad, Cuban immigrant Miguel “Mike” Angel Bezos, in a touching video posted to Amazon AMZN, -2.02% and his social media pages on Thursday, in honor of the senior Bezos being honored with a Liberty Star at the new Statue of Liberty Museum on Ellis Island. Mike Bezos is not the Amazon founder’s biological founder, but he has raised him since he was four.
My dad came here from Cuba all by himself without speaking English when he was 16 years old, and has been kicking ass ever since. Thank you for all the love and heart, Dad! pic.twitter.com/nuavG0yEtM He came to the U.S. nothing but three shirts, three pairs of pants, a pair of shoes — and a handmade jacket that his mother stitched for him from rags, which has become a family heirloom.
Mike Bezos lived in a refugee camp in Florida for about three weeks before being sent to high school in Wilmington, Del., where he learned English and earned a scholarship to the University of Albuquerque in New Mexico. And that’s also where he met his future wife, and Jeff Bezos’ mom, Jackie.
