Ben Rubin expanded his outreach to the local music community in a new way when he started opening up the space on Tuesday nights for an open mic.

Ben Rubin is the owner and proprietor of JC Instrumental, which has become one of the focal points of the Jersey City music community. Ben Rubin came to Jersey City looking for a doctoral degree in history. He found a career in music instead.

“In fact, I have a songwriter camp coming up for teen songwriters in June that Rio the Messenger is teaching,” Rubin continued. “We are also starting to bring in more like-minded musicians from the community to teach individual workshops or camps or whatever. All that is really exciting.” Music has always figured heavily in Rubin’s life, from failed elementary school violin lessons to playing the trumpet and tuba in his high school marching band and orchestra. It was in high school that he discovered punk rock, and that led to picking up bass and guitar and playing in local bands.

Once he started focusing on JC Instrumental as something he could do full-time, he learned another lesson.
