We chat with TheLastVoyageoftheDemeter star Javier Botet about creating a more demonic version of Dracula and his legacy as a monster performer in horror:

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Javier Botet returns to the horror genre with the latest adaptation of Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Botet is a renowned creature performer in the genre, having starred in the likes of the REC franchise, The Conjuring 2, both IT movies and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, among many others.

Ahead of the movie's release, Screen Rant spoke exclusively with star Javier Botet to discuss The Last Voyage of the Demeter, his life-long dream to play Dracula, crafting a more demonic approach to the iconic vampire, and more. Note: This interview was conducted before the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and the movie covered here would not exist without the labor of the writers and actors in WGA and SAG-AFTRA. The article was also edited for clarity.

When we shot Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, for me, it was good, and the first thing we did when we moved to Berlin, where we started shooting [the Demeter], André and I got a lunch and dinner, and we started speaking about how happy we both were about doing a Dracula movie for Amblin. Spielberg was around our minds, and he was around the project, so for us, it was like a dream.

There's more intelligence that's there than most other creatures you play, and I love, like you say, the way it kind of develops as he gets stronger throughout the film. What was that like finding that balance as the movie went on between the power that he holds, but isn't quite there yet, as it grows?

I think it's gonna be a real thrill ride when people do finally get to see it in a couple of months. I love how, towards the end of the movie, he actually gets to come face-to-face with people instead of just hunting them down stealthily. What was it like for you to have those intimidating moments with them?
