The Paralympic sprinter has shared his personal experiences
August marks Child Vision Awareness Month, a dedicated period that underscores the critical importance of early eye care for children. As part of the programme, Paralympic sprinter Jason Smyth has shared his personal experiences and insights on how vision health can significantly impact a child's development and opportunities. Jason Smyth MBE is an Irish retired sprint runner.
"Early detection and intervention for vision issues are crucial for a child's overall development," he told Belfast Live. Smyth, who has excelled in sports despite his visual loss, draws a parallel between the meticulous care he takes to maintain his athletic performance and the need for children to receive timely vision support.
Contemplating his own journey, Smyth recalls the significant obstacles he faced growing up with a visual impairment. "With the right support, determination, and a focus on what I could do rather than what I couldn’t, I was able to overcome these challenges."
