Kidd is seeking to become only the eighth person in history to win an NBA championship as a player and coach for the same franchise.

It’s been a long journey for Kidd. Now he’s seeking to become only the eighth person in history to win an NBA championship as a player and coach for the same franchise.A curtain opened to one of TD Garden’s corner entrances and several hundred journalists streamed in to watch and video the last 30 minutes of Dallas’ practice.

Kidd said during his introductory news conference in July of 2021 that he’d learned the values of communication and patience during his two seasons as a Lakers assistant under Frank Vogel.Indeed, he’s exhibited both traits while becoming in three short seasons the first coach to take the Mavericks to two conference championship series. But this hasn’t merely been a three-year Mavericks journey for Kidd. It’s been three decades.

“It’s an incredible thing to be able to hopefully achieve,” said Kidd, thanking former majority shareholder Mark Cuban and“I’m with a great group of leaders,” Kidd added. “We’re in a great city, when you talk about sports. And then you talk about our team, Luka and Kai and the rest of the group, it’s an incredible opportunity and I’m just very fortunate to be in this seat.”

Yet on that night, Kidd emphasized that Dallas was within 81-79 midway through the third quarter when asked what he learned about his team: “That I think we can compete with the best. “Not looking at the score, but we truly believe that we have the talent to compete.” Mavericks assistant Jared Dudley, who was a fellow assistant with Kidd in Los Angeles, tweeted after Dallas clinched this Finals berth: “It’s time for JKIDD to get his flowers. ... Humbled and honored to be able to learn from one of the greatest basketball minds the game has EVER seen.”
