After the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, former Eagles center Jason Kelce faced criticism from both Eagles and Taylor Swift fans for publicly supporting both his former team and his brother, Travis Kelce, who plays for the Chiefs. Jason attempted to explain his position, emphasizing his love for both his brother and the Eagles organization, but ultimately received backlash from both sides.
After Jason Kelce received backlash for supporting the Eagles and Travis Kelce at Super Bowl LIX, his little brother is standing 10 toes down behind him. There was a clear winner when the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs at the Super Bowl on Sunday 40–22.
For former Eagles center Jason Kelce, the win was complicated since he played for the team for 13 years before retiring in 2024, and they were up against his little brother, Travis Kelce. To complicate things further, when Travis and Taylor Swift went public with their romance in September 2023, he gained an entirely new fandom outside the typical Kansas City Chiefs fans — Swifties. When the Chiefs lost, some of Taylor’s fans took it pretty hard — to the point that they scrutinized Jason’s support for his former team’s victory. By the same token, Eagles fans also felt some type of way that Jason openly supported his brother."The Eagles dominated and Jason Kelce was MAD about it. Keep him on your Eagles Mt. Rushmore if you want to, he's officially off mine. Can't believe what I just listened to," another person wrote.from Taylor's fans, which people speculated caused it to be removed. Once removed, he received more backlash from Eagles fans., Jason explained his support for the Eagles and Travis to hopefully quell the naysayers."Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles, my former teammates, and friends on being SB LIX Champions!!" Jason wrote."There were a lot of emotions last night, and now that I've collected my thoughts, I'll attempt to share them in the longest tweet ever.""On one hand, I wanted what is best for my brother, and to see his success. And on the other hand, there are so many people, teammates, and coaches, in the Philadelphia Eagles organization that I care deeply about, Many of whom I owe my own success to throughout my career." "There isn't a person I love or care about more. It has been tough to process these feelings, of course I feel for him and am always rooting for him, but I know he does not need, nor want my pity."removed the congratulatory post from their Instagram."I had Jake take that graphic down because that post had too many pictures of me. I wanted the post to be reflective of the guys who just won, not me. I didn't win shit in this one, it felt weird to congratulate this team with a bunch of pictures of me."podcast, they further discussed, in person, the backlash Jason received for supporting both the Eagles and his brother, and Travis was quick to defend him."I knew it was going to be weird going into it. It progressively got weirder as the week went on," Jason said."On one hand, you've played your entire life with an organization and team. A lot of people in that building, coaches, friends, teammates you've gone through adversity with, and it really makes you very, very close. And then, on the other hand, you have your brother, and I've always supported you. I've always wanted you to win.""And I wanted you to win this game. I thought I made that clear," Jason added."It was hard to navigate because...I'm obviously trying to say that I have people on the Eagles that I love, and I also have you, and I tried to make it known that I was rooting for you, and it felt like I couldn't be right. felt like no matter what I said, some people were gonna skew it and say that I'm rooting for the Eagles, and some people were gonna skew it and say that I was rooting for the Chiefs or Travis."Travis had a few things to say about the backlash toward his brother, reassuring him that he was aware of his support no matter what was discussed on social media. "It's just the world we live in, man. Everybody wants to just fucking call people out. I know I always had your support," Travis said, noting that Jason and his wife, Kylie Kelce, have created a great community within Philadelphia and the Eagles organization, including their philanthropic work."You don't have to explain anything to anybody. I know who Jason Kelce is, and I know my brother and what his intentions are, and nobody can ever fucking confuse that. You can't let these jamokes online make you think that you're in the wrong for what you're saying," he continued."I think the people in the Philadelphia organization understand exactly who you are and what you represent, and you were saying it as well."Travis told Jason it"doesn't make you less of a brother" because he's still very attached to the Philadelphia organization and proud of their win.Jason became visibly choked up when he explained that his connection to Philadelphia doesn't take precedence over rooting for his brother."No matter who won, it was gonna be happy and sad regardless and trying to communicate why I might be rooting for the Eagles," he said. Before Jason could continue with his explanation, Travis said,"Fuck 'em. You don't owe any of these dickheads the acknowledgment. You really don't, Jason. Everyone that knows you knows your intentions. Anybody saying anything otherwise is, like you said, is just fucking trying to get a rise outta somebody else.""You're giving these people way too much of your effort, too much of your time, too much of your attention," Travis added. "I didn't know what it was gonna feel like going through the game. I thought I did. I thought I understood going into it that I would be happy in some way and sad in another way. The further the game went on, I just got more and more upset," Jason responded."And like, part of that is, like, I'm in a box with all of our family, loved ones, and friends. We're all just like, dude, this, this sucks for Trav, this sucks for his team. And...I didn't anticipate the amount of just, like, sheer discomfort and frustration that I would have watching the game."In the beginning, Jason received a lot of backlash from some Taylor and Eagles fans. Once the Kelce brothers had an opportunity to candidly discuss the topic on their podcast, more people stood behind them both with positive reactions. One person wrote,"Im once again praising the hell outta the Kelce parents. It's so incredibly genuinely healing to see these grown men talk with such love, respect, and understanding with each other. I just love seeing Jason being there for his brother. Even Trav is being open and honest with his feelings on it being a tough loss is so appreciated. A nice reminder that is all about love and indeed, loss..."If you want to hear more about Jason's mixed emotions and Travis's reflection on the Super Bowl loss, listen to the full podcast
