His guilty plea Thursday also calls for him to return $9.4 million to the city.
A paid legal representative for Jason Hughes entered a guilty plea Thursday on behalf of the real estate broker and former mayoral adviser who made millions off a pair of city real estate deals — a single misdemeanor conflict-of-interest charge that resulted in a $400 fine and one year of summary probation.
Years in the making and the product of complicated negotiations between criminal and civil prosecutors and high-priced defense lawyers, the plea agreement formally closed one of the ugliest chapters in San Diego political history. Under a deal approved Wednesday by the City Council, he will also pay back the money he collected from a pair of leases that cost San Diego hundreds of millions.
