, in a collective moment of insecurity and turbulence, Jari talks to me about visibility, getting into acting and modeling, and the importance of community for her first solo magazine cover, shot by photographer. KD: I’ve had so many run-ins with stylists who, for whatever reason, are just like, “Yeah, we’ll just drape this sample-size garment over you.” KD: When people see plus-size women, especially when people see Black trans women, there’s this assumption around bravery, strength, and courage. How do you feel about those comments or assumptions?
JJ: I find a lot of grounding in pulling myself out of that idea of a model, because it brings me back to what I’m actually doing this for and who I’m actually doing this for. It doesn’t feel like I’m doing this to become famous, or I’m doing this to be well known. I’m doing this for representation, I’m doing this for that young trans kid, young queer people, so they can be like, “I can do this too.
