Billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman became the first non-professional astronaut to perform a spacewalk during the Polaris Dawn mission, pushing the boundaries of human exploration. The five-day orbital journey, launched by SpaceX on September 10th, saw Isaacman and his crew achieve numerous milestones, including flying higher than any previous Earth orbit.
The goal of the Polaris program is to “accelerate the timeline for making humankind a multiplanetary species ,” Jared Isaacman told IE in an interview.During the mission, on September 12, billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist Jared Isaacman became the first non-professional astronaut to perform a spacewalk.Isaacman’s spacewalk exploits add to the growing list of firsts under his name. Still, while he was flying at high speed around Earth and looking down at our planet, there was at least some time for introspection.
Flying so far from Earth’s surface allowed the Polaris Dawn crew to collect valuable scientific data. To reach their record-high altitude of 869 miles , they flew through the inner Van Allen radiation belt, exposing them to large amounts of cosmic radiation. While some have characterized Polaris Dawn predominantly as a space tourist mission, Isaacman argues that commercial spaceflight is now at the vanguard of space innovation.
