Jar Jar actor Ahmed Best reveals what it's really like to work with George Lucas, explaining how Star Wars' Gungan sidekick came to be.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Ahmed Best, the actor who played Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, has revealed the "collaborative" approach George Lucas really took when creating the Gungan sidekick. It's not difficult to imagine how intimidating it must be to work with George Lucas; this is the man who created Star Wars after all.
In spite of that, though, Jar Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best has revealed Lucas followed a remarkably collaborative process. In an interview on The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks podcast, he described the surreal experience of working with Lucas, one that began during his final auditions when - after initially giving detailed instructions - Lucas simply told the rookie actor to do what he wanted. Best switched things up, doing kicks and flips, and Lucas was willing to change his mind.
It's quite delightful to hear how collaborative a filmmaker George Lucas really was, welcoming others to become part of shaping the Star Wars galaxy too. The tragedy, of course, is that in Best's case the character he played was far from well-received; the backlash had pronounced impacts on Best's own mental health, the subject of the podcast.
