Japanese celebration in Houston abounds with hope for good fortune in Year of the Rabbit

Japanese drumming ensemble, Kaminari Taiko, perform for people coming together to celebrate the Japanese New Year on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023 at Levy Park Pavilion in Houston.Three-year-old Lukas Miori snatched a wooden mallet with a grin. Tongue out in concentration, he swung down and sunk the tool into a wet, sticky rice cake called “mochi.”

Children ran from booth to booth at the event, hosted in its first year by the Japan America Society of Houston. The celebration drew people of all cultures – many wandering up to it while walking their dogs or bringing their children to the park. Nearby, others played “Fukuwarai,” where they were blindfolded and placed cutouts of noses, eyes and mouths on a poster of a face. More played “Tonton Sumo,” propping paper wrestlers on a box and hitting the corners with their fingers until the force knocked the loser down.

Toshiki Tanaka, an event volunteer, said he viewed some of the celebration as an opportunity for others to experience a slice of Japanese life. Six-year-old Evelyn Quach hit the rice cake over and over, smiling as she said “Yoshi,” a character in the Nintendo game, Super Mario Bros. Her mother, Rowena, laughed when she heard the mistake.
