TOKYO: Japan plans to authorise Thursday the antiviral drug remdesivir to treat oronavirus patients, the government said, with an eye to approving another mediation Avigan this month.

“If there is no problem we hope to swiftly approve today” at the health ministry’s regulatory panel, top government spokesman Yoshihide Suga told reporters. The US go-ahead ame after a major linial trial showed remdesivir – originally developed to treat Ebola – shortened the time to reovery in some patients by a third.Remdesivir, whih is administered by injetion, was already available to some patients who enrolled in linial trials around the world.

The drug, whose generi name is favipiravir, was approved for use in Japan in 2014 but only in flu outbreaks that are not being effetively addressed by existing mediations.
