Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba wants an end to his country's 'asymmetrical' security relationship with the United States.
The new prime minister of Japan , Shigeru Ishiba, recently proposed revising security arrangements with the United States including stationing its troops on Guam .
Guam Museum's curator Michael Lujan Bevacqua, himself a member of the indigenous Chamorro community, said he was "very taken aback" to hear Mr Ishiba's proposal — a feeling he said was shared by many on social media. Japanese troops could join US marines for regular rotations through the Top End as Tokyo, Washington and Canberra continue to deepen defence ties.
"Experts say the island could serve as a critical logistics hub in a potential conflict over Taiwan," wrote analysts Clara Fong and Diana Roy in a briefing paper on Guam for the Council on Foreign Relations, another Washington-based think tank, published last month. "A Japanese military presence would compound increasing tensions in the region between the US and China and North Korea," she said.Despite Guam's traumatic history of Japanese occupation, people from Japan have been one of the biggest tourist markets for Guam in the decades since.
