REUTERS/Issei Kato/File PhotoTOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is under pressure to take bolder steps to soften the economic blow of the coronavirus, with calls from his political partners to hand out more cash to more people.
Natsuo Yamaguchi, head of the Komeito party - the junior partner in the coalition government - urged Abe's administration to make a payment of ¥100,000 to every citizen. Abe's administration is hoping to pass through parliament later this month an extra budget worth ¥16.8 trillion to fund part of the stimulus package.
Last week, the government declared a state of emergency in major population centres to combat the virus, urging citizens to stay at home and some facilities to shut down.
