Japan is the world’s fourth-biggest economy, yet only the ninth-biggest defence spender. As China’s military build-up continues, that is beginning to change.

Japan’s progress to full rearmament, remaking it as a “normal country”, continues apace. Tokyo is simply pushing past Japan’s constitutional constraint – that it “forever renounces war as a sovereign right”.

Joining the AUKUS weapons development effort “is quite a natural development”, according to Tokyo’s former ambassador to Australia, Shingo Yamagami. But if Japan’s sense of crisis makes inclusion in AUKUS’s high-tech research seem natural, it’s unnatural in two other ways. So why would the existing AUKUS partners agree, and what’s the rush? Japan’s invitation to the AUKUS weapons research program was orchestrated by the US.
