Japan is the world’s fourth-biggest economy, yet only the ninth-biggest defence spender. As China’s military build-up continues, that is beginning to change.
Japan’s progress to full rearmament, remaking it as a “normal country”, continues apace. Tokyo is simply pushing past Japan’s constitutional constraint – that it “forever renounces war as a sovereign right”.
Joining the AUKUS weapons development effort “is quite a natural development”, according to Tokyo’s former ambassador to Australia, Shingo Yamagami. But if Japan’s sense of crisis makes inclusion in AUKUS’s high-tech research seem natural, it’s unnatural in two other ways. So why would the existing AUKUS partners agree, and what’s the rush?
