Japan have undone all their good work against Germany with needless defeat to Costa Rica 🟢 danielstorey85

Japan paid for their slumber and then for their profligacy. In 90 first-half minutes at this tournament they have recorded three shots. In 90 second-half minutes, 22. But while they were the beneficiaries of turning tides against Germany, catching their superiors on the break, they suffered the same fate here.

We should be celebrating on Costa Rica’s behalf, of course. Certainly you have to admire the resolve of any team thatwithout even forcing their opponent to take a goal kick and still maintains a shot at qualifying. They streamed from Al Riffa station to the Ahmed bin Ali with pensive looks, as if waiting to witness the end of something – it might just be a new beginning.

But if this was a triumph, you had to squint a little to see it. Costa Rica are not strictly a team that prioritises defence and are certainly not one that aims to attack – they have scored with their only shot on target in this tournament. They just sort of: willing and workmanlike but with no obvious strategy for getting the ball close to goal and no particular inclination to find one.

Which makes this a lamentable, foolish misstep from Japan and Moriyasu. They have a fine squad full of players who now operate in Europe’s top leagues. They have overhauled the playing style and the average age. They are moving on from J-League regulars . Moriyasu has twice got his formation wrong, twice changed it at half-time, and twice had to rely upon substitutes to change the match. Against Germany, the dice roll worked superbly. But it is unforgivable to have placed themselves in the same situation again – this time there was no escape from ignominy. They’re going to have to do this the hard way, by taking at least a point against Spain.
