Japan is considering quadrupling its LNG purchases for emergency reserves as part of its energy security strategy.
Japan is discussing quadrupling LNG purchases for its emergency reserves as part of a plan to boost energy security , a senior official at Japan ’s industry ministry has told Reuters. “From the mid- to late-2020s, we will try to secure at least one cargo per month throughout a year - that is, at least 12 cargoes per year,” Yuya Hasegawa, director of the energy resources development division at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry METI, told Reuters.
The country aims to continue restarting nuclear power plants and boost renewables capacity, the new industry minister said last week, signaling that the new government will not alter materially the country’s current energy policy. “We can use renewable power to the maximum, and we will restart nuclear power, the safe one, as much as possible,” said Industry Minister Yoji Muto, who was appointed by the new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
