Global temperatures reached a new monthly high in January 2025, defying expectations due to a cooling La Nina and predictions of a slightly cooler year. This record-breaking warmth underscores the continued impact of greenhouse gases on the planet's climate.

The world experienced yet another monthly heat record in January 2025, a surprising development considering an unusually cold United States, the presence of a cooling La Nina , and predictions of a slightly cooler 2025. This record-breaking warmth was revealed by the European climate service Copernicus, which reported that January 2025 was 0.09 degrees Celsius (0.16 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than January 2024, the previous hottest January on record.

This marked the 18th month in the last 19 that the world has reached or surpassed the internationally agreed-upon temperature threshold for a global warming crisis. The Copernicus records date back to 1940, but other U.S. and British records extend to 1850. Scientists utilizing proxies like tree rings indicate that this era is the warmest in approximately 120,000 years, coinciding with the start of human civilization. The primary driver of this unprecedented heat is the accumulation of greenhouse gases resulting from the combustion of coal, oil, and natural gas. However, natural contributions to temperature fluctuations have not behaved as anticipated. Samantha Burgess, the strategic lead for climate at the European weather agency, explained that the most significant natural factor influencing global temperatures is the natural cycle of changes in the equatorial Pacific Ocean waters. When the central Pacific experiences unusually warm temperatures, it signifies an El Nino, typically leading to spikes in global temperatures. Last year witnessed a substantial El Nino, although its impact on global temperatures was somewhat mitigated by the La Nina, which tends to dampen the effects of global warming and make record temperatures less probable.
