Cooling’s career started in the 1970s when she began to exhibit erotic work featuring gay and lesbian couples and lovers
. Her early pieces between 1978 and 1982 were described by Johanna Fateman in The New Yorker as someone exploring “queer figuration as both a personal expression and a mode of critique at the dawn of the Reagan era and the AIDS crisis.”
Jennifer Cerutti, another of Cooling’s students, said Cooling “had a dynamic, funny and a bit abrasive communication style. On our first day of class, she announced that we were going to do something different in her class: a technique for painting still life that she had been practicing, forcing our paintings to be more abstract than realist. … I’m grateful to her for pushing us the way she did.”
In the mid-1990s, Cooling’s work once again included overtly lesbian and erotic content. This was coupled with her expressive use of color and interplay of abstract and realistic forms. Richards said that Cooling’s strong work during this time was why she was awarded the Marie Walsh Foundation Space Grant in 1998.
Thinking about Cooling’s career, Lugo said that she “worked in a variety of radically different styles, subjects and themes, including pure abstraction, figuration, still lifes, landscapes and images augmented with or incorporating text. She changed them and the media in which her works were created frequently.”
