A landmark partnership between the Jane Goodall Institute USA and FormationQ will use trapped-ion quantum computing to explore ecological roots of intergroup violence in chimpanzees versus peaceful behavior in bonobos, combining six decades of field research with advanced computational modeling.

The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) USA and FormationQ have launched a groundbreaking research partnership employing trapped-ion quantum computing from IonQ to investigate ecological factors behind intergroup violence in certain species versus peaceful coexistence in others.

This two-year initiative, announced on the 66th anniversary of Dr. Jane Goodall's arrival at Gombe, Tanzania, integrates over six decades of pioneering field research with advanced computational modeling, hybrid quantum-classical computing, and behavioral ecology. The program, titled "Ecology of War and Peace: Using Quantum-Enhanced Agent-Based Modelling to Explain Contrasting Intergroup Behaviour in Chimpanzees and Bonobos," represents the first application of quantum-enhanced computation to ecology, evolution, and behavior studies.

It unites JGI's scientific legacy, the University of Minnesota's behavioral modeling, FormationQ's applied program expertise, and IonQ's quantum computing platform. Central to the project is B3GET (Behavior, Ecology, Genetics, Evolution, and Tradeoffs), a sophisticated agent-based model simulating virtual primates across artificial landscapes. Researchers will manipulate ecological variables like food distribution, home range size, and group cohesion rules to study their impact on cooperation and conflict over time.

Chimpanzees and bonobos, humanity's closest relatives, exhibit starkly different intergroup behaviors: chimpanzees engage in organized, lethal aggression, while bonobos maintain peaceful inter-community relations. The key to this divergence, researchers posit, lies in ecological conditions-resource distribution, territorial range demands, and individual travel decisions. Decades of field data provide deep insights, but the interaction of numerous ecological variables within complex systems remains a major challenge.

By combining advanced agent-based modeling with hybrid quantum-classical methods, the program aims to explore this complexity more effectively, improve large-scale behavioral model calibration, and identify the ecological conditions that distinguish chimpanzee aggression from bonobo peacefulness. The project will also yield insights into how chimpanzee natural behavior correlates with habitat and mortality rates, crucial for conservation strategies.

Dr. Lilian Pintea, JGI's Vice President of Conservation Science and Principal Investigator, emphasized that Dr. Goodall's 65-year legacy of meticulous observation now converges with quantum science to understand ecological drivers of chimpanzee interactions, which directly informs conservation priorities. She noted the program's reflection of JGI's mission to leverage cutting-edge technology for critical chimpanzee and conservation questions, adding that this initiative was among the last she and Jane Goodall developed together.
