On Jan. 6, 2021, a mob of insurrectionists supporting then President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol complex as Congress was certifying Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory.
The Capitol rioters caused more than $2.7 million in losses, according to the DOJ, including damage to the Capitol building and grounds.
A bipartisan House committee spent 18 months investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection. Over several public hearings last summer, the panel built a case that Trump instigated the rioters in an “attempted coup” to keep Congress from certifying Biden as the next president.
