His place on next month’s tour of Pakistan is guaranteed after the gamble to pitch him in the team this summer ahead of Ben Foakes and Jonny Bairstow paid off handsomely. Smith’s partner is expecting their first child at some point during the series. Does he stay or does he go? Or go and come back? New Zealand is not an easy flight and for Smith, and England, it will not be an easy call either.
It is likely that Smith, assuming he keeps his place in the team following Pakistan, will miss at least part of the series in New Zealand. Rather than a recall for Foakes or Bairstow, Essex’s Jordan Cox would be likely to fill in for Smith. The keeper-batter has been part of the the Test squad this summer.
“Definitely,” he said. “I’m unexposed at international level, so every team you come up against seems to be against new people. So they’re learning about you, but you’re also learning about them. So if I can get a good sight of a few of their bowlers now every little helps going into that in 18 months. Every little experience you can get on them, will help me move forward.”
